Biennial Symposium

Topical themes, outstanding guest speakers

Since 1990, the Network has been holding professional development retreats every two years. These training activities, conducted by experienced specialists, have dealt with bilingual revision, tools for self-development, the concept and techniques of plain language, translation in advertising, legal translation, customer service, and information technology as a tool for translation.

Our next symposium, which will also mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the NTE, will take place October 21-23, 2010 in Cornwall, Ontario.

The last symposium was held on October 25-27, 2007 in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The Organizing Committee had set up a stimulating and exciting program [PDF document]. Of course, these events are always a perfect opportunity to meet NTE members or see colleagues we have not seen in a long time.

Closing addresses at past retreats have been given by Aurel Ramat, author of the Ramat de la typographie, Robert Dubuc, well-known language consultant and terminologist, Pierre Calvé, linguist and former dean of the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Education, and Jean-François Joly, former president of the International Federation of Translators, the opening address at the 2000 symposium was given by Mrs. Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada; in 2002 we followed in painstaking details the fascinating work of an expert dubbing a movie. In 2005, we were privileged to have Renald Legendre, its author, present us the brand new edition of his Dictionnaire actuel de l'éducation
