The NTE’s Liliane Vincent Merit Scholarship

The Network has been awarding merit scholarships since 1990. This initiative is designed to encourage translation students to pursue their professional dreams and strive for excellence.

1. What is the Network of Translators in Education’s (NTE’s) Liliane Vincent Merit Scholarship?
   This annual $1,500 scholarship is named in honour of the NTE’s founding president. It is awarded to an individual enrolled in a translation program at a Canadian university who has completed at least one year of their programme. Preference is given to students who demonstrate an interest in education as an area of specialization.
   
   
2. Who is Liliane Vincent?
   After completing her studies at Laurentian University and the University of Ottawa, Liliane Vincent worked as a translator and editor, and as the director of language services for the Canadian Teachers’ Federation. In 1985, in light of the differences among school systems and educational terminology across Canada, Liliane brought together a group of language professionals to create the NTE, a national network that provides terminology support and that acts as a channel of mutual assistance for translators working in education. Liliane served as president of the NTE until 1995 and she continues to play an active role in the organization today.
   
   
3. Who is eligible?
   Full-time students enrolled in a minimum two-year Bachelor of Translation program at a Canadian university who are looking to pursue a career or graduate studies in the field of translation. Applicants must hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status and must intend to work in one of Canada’s official languages.
   
   
4. What are the scholarship’s criteria?
   Applicants must have a good academic record, a passion for languages, and must demonstrate an excellent aptitude for translation studies. Candidates must also demonstrate service to the community through participation in various activities and initiatives, including volunteer work. Students are encouraged to highlight their efforts and achievements in this area.
   
   
5. Who selects the recipient?
   An NTE selection committee will be formed to select the recipient.
   
   
6. How do I apply for the scholarship?
   Simply fill out the application form and join all the requested documentation in ONE single attachment (pdf or Word).
   Note: Documents submitted as part of this application will not be returned.
   
   
7. What is the application deadline for the current year’s scholarship?
   Applications are accepted from January 1 to May 31 each year.
   However, as an exception in 2021, applications will be accepted until October 1.
   
   
8. When is the scholarship awarded?
   The scholarship, along with a free one-year NTE membership, is awarded on September 30 (International Translation Day), where possible.
